Now it’s easier to track tumour movement
IT minister KT Rama Rao inaugurated the American Oncology Institute’s Calypso System and the new out-patient services at Banjara Hills virtually on Saturday at American Oncology Institute’s (AOI), Serilingampally campus.
“I am impressed that an American hospital like the American Oncology Institute (AOI) has come to our country and especially to Hyderabad. AOI has the best technology available not only in India but in entire South East Asia. This hospital is going to help the people of our State and country in fighting cancer. Our government will do ever thing possible to help AOI in bringing this international level cancer care to our people and also to bring international patients through medical tourism,” KTR said.
American Oncology Institute is the first hospital in Southeast Asia to introduce this ground-breaking new technology to cancer patients. The Calypso System is the first machine in the world to offer real-time tracking of tumour targets during radiation therapy. During radiation sessions, as patients lie on the treatment table, both their internal organs and tumours move slightly in and out of the treatment beam.
Calypso, which has been approved by the US FDA for use on any location in the body, offers the most sophisticated solution to this concern. Combining it with the capabilities of AOI’s US-based expert treatment planning team TrueBeam and RapidArc, creates a setting in which patients receive optimal cancer therapy that targets tumors and spares surrounding organs.
“In my career as a radiation oncologist, I have helped launch many new machines and witnessed an evolution in the technology available to care for cancer patients. Calypso offers the greatest level of accuracy, precision, power and speed for treating cancer with radiation therapy available today,” commented Dr M Babaiah, MD, AOI.
“We have modelled the technology available at AOI after the technology available at top US cancer centres. We verify every patient’s treatment plan at weekly tumor board meetings moderated by leading US cancer doctors,” added Joe Nicholas, president and CEO of Cancer Treatment Services International (CTSI), AOI’s US-based parent company.
