Kidney transplantation better option than dialysis

Hyderabad: Doctors of Continental Hospital, Gachibowli, on Tuesday stressed the importance of kidney patients undergoing transplantation for a better life, instead of opting for dialysis. They said the transplanted kidney from a live donor could last for 15-20 years, prolonging the patient’s lifespan.

They said anyone in the 18-50 age group could donate a kidney. The hospital has a specialised centre for treating kidney patients and carrying out transplantation.

The doctors were interacting with patients during a meet organised as part of the awareness programme. Among them were those who underwent kidney transplantation and dialysis. The doctors enlightened the gathering on the hardships faced by patients during dialysis.

Chief urologist Dr Vishwambhar Nath, senior consultant and renal transplant surgeons Dr Vasanth Kumar Reddy, Dr Srinivas Muthy, senior consultant nephrologist Kavitha Gone participating in the interactive session with patients.

The doctors clarified doubts/apprehensions over kidney donations and stressed that the donor would not face any health problem and threat to life. They stated that there have so far been cases of family members, close relatives and friends donating kidneys for the benefit of patients.
