New Delhi: Telangana State Health Minister C Laxma Reddy on Friday appealed to the Centre to set up more AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) centres, so that the traditional medicines and alternative therapies will become accessible to people.

He was participating in one-day conference to discuss various issues connected with the propagation and mainstreaming of AYUSH inaugurated by Shripad Yasso Naik, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and AYUSH (Independent Charge). Laxma Reddy stressed on the utility value of alternative medicines in the country, and particularly in Telangana State.

The traditional medicines, particularly the Unani, were also widely popular among the minorities. Unani physicians were sought after beyond the shores of India. He also urged the Centre to find ways to establish medical colleges in traditional medicines and therapies.

Department of AYUSH came into existence in 1995 but on a different name but it focused on development of education and research in Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy systems.

However, it was elevated to the Ministry status in the Modi government with an emphasis on upgrading AYUSH’s educational standards, quality control and standardization of drugs domestically and internationally.
