The 58-year-old patient, Madhuram, has fully recovered and was discharged on Tuesday.

A team of orthopaedic specialists at Sunshine Hospitals treated a rare case of a woman suffering from a musculo skeletal disorder known as Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE) through multiple surgeries including hip replacement and knee replacement. The 58-year-old patient, Madhuram, has fully recovered and was discharged on Tuesday. SLE is a disorder wherein the immune system instead of safeguarding the body tissue and parts, will inflict damage to them.

It often harms the heart, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, nervous system, lungs, joints, skin etc. In this case it was an affliction of the hip and knee joints. Madhuram was suffering from the rare ailment and presented herself ten years ago to Dr Guruva Reddy, with complaints of pain in multiple joints. She developed severe arthritis of both the hip and knee joints. The excruciating pain virtually crippled her and she was unable to take up daily chores.

Initially, bilateral total hip replacements were performed with uncemented prosthesis and these followed by bilateral total knee replacements were performed on her. The patient has since recovered completely and is fit to manage day to day activities without difficulty. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Guruva Reddy, MD, Sunshine Hospitals, said, “An ailment like SLE is a rare phenomenon. It was vital that the problem was diagnosed correctly to treat it appropriately.
