Hyderabad: The news that a team of doctors in Osmania General Hospital (OGH) have successfully performed liver transplantation has come as a pleasant surprise to skeptics that Government Hospital cannot compete with corporate hospitals.

  • Efforts of Dr Madhusudhan of Osmania General Hospital paid off with help of KCR

For Dr Ch Madhusudhan, who was trained at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, it was a dream coming true. He said he had been trying to secure permission from the head of Gastroenterology Department for performing a liver transplantation for the past five years at OGH, but in vain.

“Finally the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Minister for Health and Principal Secretary for Health reposed faith in me and permitted me to go ahead,” he said. The success has brought the liver transplant surgery within the reach of the middle class since it costs about Rs 10 lakh at OGH as against Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh in corporate hospitals.

He expressed the hope that soon the government would consider including liver transplantation under Aarogyasri scheme list. Now the maximum limit for treatment is Rs 3 lakh. The audit team has already audited the consumables used in transplantation. Discussions are on with the CEO of Aarogyasri.
