New Delhi : With over 1 million cases reported every year, Cancer is tightening its grip on the Indian population. Breast Cancer alone has grown to be Delhi’s number one cancer among women.
It is well known that cancer is curable when detected early. Life after cancer is a promise of many years of good life. Yet people deny the changes they see in their bodies, until they are life threatening. One of the major causes of late stage presentation and low survival is the lack of awareness among the general public, leading to a number of misconceptions, fears, stigmas in addition to lack of any preventive behavior.
Cancer Sahyog, the Emotional support Group of Indian Cancer Society Delhi, in collaboration with PHD Chamber of Commerce is organizing an annual seminar highlighting the issue: Cancer - Looming threat and the Perils of Willful Ignorance.
Indian Cancer Society has invited experts from different walks of life to explore the contours of cancer, its growth and spread in India; the underlying reasons for its phenomenal growth. It also seeks to understand why there is so much denial of symptoms and so little recall of the risk factors.
Thus Dr GK Rath (Chief, IRCH) will give an overview of Cancer in his keynote address.
Dr Subhojit Dey will explain the role of research in charting a future course of action. Dr Brindha Sitaram will give a psycho-oncologist’s view of denial in ordinary people, and Dr Jagdish Kaur (MoH&FW) will chart a course for civil society acting with governments. ICS has requested Mr Alok Sriram, President, PHD CCI, to give a corporate view of using CSR to create Cancer Control measures. Finally, Nadoja Dr Mahesh Joshi, Additional Director General Doordarshan & Mrs. Nalini Singh, representing independent broadcasters will speak of Media responsibility in spreading the word about Cancer Control.
During the seminar, ICS will award Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Centre (RGCIRC) for its active support to ICS’ mission of Conquest of Cancer & its impactful work in the field of Preventive Oncology.
The Seminar addresses issues of vital concern to our country and ICS hopes that this information is disseminated to a wider audience.
