Complaints of lower back pain and inability to stand for prolonged periods of time had hampered the mobility of a 70-year-old patient. His condition was further complicated as his kidneys were not functioning properly along with changes in liver and cardiac insufficiency. Scans done at Nanavati Super-Speciality Hospital (NSSH) revealed a fracture in the lower back-bone. It could not be ascertained whether the fracture had been caused by any infection, tumor or osteoporosis.

“Following a biopsy and a thorough clinical evaluation, weak bones were revealed to be the cause of the fracture. Though surgery was considered as an alternative for fixation of the spine fracture, we had to rule it out owing to the high risk profile of the patient on account of deranged kidney functions and heart insufficiency,” stated Dr Nikhil Arbatti, Consultant Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeon, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital (NSSH).

The patient underwent a minimally invasive spine procedure under the supervision of Dr. Arbatti. A team comprising Dr. Ajay Choksi - Gastroenterologist, Dr. Nitin Sonavane - Nephrologist and Dr. Akshay Mehta - Cardiologist were present during the procedure to ensure that there were no complications.

The patient was ambulatory the next day after the surgery and his vital parameters were in control. The patient is now in a position to walk on his own 2-3 times a day and can go to the bathroom with support, a possibility which was unfeasible till a month ago.
