Mr.Kirit Patel – 65 polio patient afflicted with a fractured thigh bone was completely cured of his condition following a successful reconstructive revision hip replacement surgery at Nanavati Super-Speciality Hospital. The patient, who had undergone hip replacement 8 years back owing to un-united femoral neck fracture on right side, started walking the next day following the complicated surgery.

“Following an accidental fall, the patient suffered a severe fracture around his hip prosthesis. His condition was compounded owing to the fact that the fracture had resulted in multiple bone fragments around the affected area. Further complications arose as there was a high risk of dislocation and muscle imbalance as the patient suffered from polio,” stated Dr. Pradeep Bhosale, Director, Joint Replacement Surgery, NSSH, who operated on the patient.

The old cemented hip prosthesis of the patient was replaced by using extra-long Titanium Modular Hip prosthesis with bone reconstruction using bone graft from Tata Memorial Hospital Bone Bank.

Modern surgical advances in hip replacement techniques has helped to extend benefit of primary total joint replacement in cases of post accidental fracture around prosthesis through efficient pre-operative planning, state-of-the-art operation theatres and surgical facilities and selective implants, reiterated Dr. Bhosale.
