A 61 year old male from Delhi got a new lease of life when he received a cadaver liver today at Apollo Hospitals Delhi. The patient was suffering from liver cirrhosis since 2013 and his only chance of survival was through liver transplant. The patient was in wait for the liver from 45 days.

As soon as Apollo Hospitals Delhi received information from King George Medical University, Lucknow about availability of a cadaver liver, the hospital authorities sprang into action and the organ was immediately flown from Lucknow to Delhi within an hour.

The organ was retrieved from a brain dead patient who was victim of a road accident.

A green corridor was created by Delhi police authorities to smoothly facilitate the transport of the organ from Delhi Airport to Indraprastha Apollo hospitals.

The liver covered the distance of 29 km in 26 minutes and was received at 2 pm today at the hospital.

This great feat was achieved through seamless coordination between the two hospitals and cooperation of Delhi Police authorities.

Maj Gen (Dr ) LR Sharma, Director Medical Services, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi said: “ With the coordination between surgeons of the two hospitals and the Delhi traffic police, a medical team transported the liver over 29 kms from the Airport to Apollo Delhi in less than 26 minutes by creating a Green Corridor.

The response time of the hospital is very quick. We have to make decisions and prepare for a transplant within minutes of the arrival of the organ.

I would like to thank the Delhi police without whom this miraculous feat could not be possible. They are the real heroes who made sure that no delay or problems occurred during transportation of the organ to its destination.”
