Hyderabad: The Telangana State government is getting ready to hold discussions on organ transplantation to be included under the Aarogyasri Board, to which it has submitted proposals. The move comes in the wake of lack of proper public awareness on donation of organs like heart, liver, kidney and lungs. People were not responding to the appeal with a view to religious beliefs.

The list of those in need of organ donation and waiting is piling up every day. At the same time the number of persons who have spent thousands undergoing surgeries and struggling with life is also increasing. These people depend on organ transplantation as a permanent solution to their health problems, said Dr G Swarnalata, coordinator, Jeevandhan Scheme.

These problems have been analysed and proposals submitted by the government, CEO of Aarogyasri Trust Chandrasekhar told The Hans India. He said the government was getting ready to approve the proposals soon. People are happy with this decision. They want NGOs to be encouraged to work as crucial partners in the endeavour to encourage organ donation.

He said over 2,500, including 1,000 suffering from kidney ailments, have registered themselves under the government’s Jeevandan scheme in operation since 2013, while there have been only 243 donors. Over 400 have been waiting for months in NIMS, Osmania and Gandhi hospitals, Dr Swarnalata told THI. The 243 donors brought a new lease of life to 700 persons. She says that many in private hospitals are offering to donate organs while such response has been found lacking in government establishments.

A beneficiary of organ donation, Madhavi, who waited for long, expresses happiness that the donated organ helped her daughter. With this she says she is inspired to take up similar donation. Teja, counselor of organ transplantation, Care Hospital, told THI that officials were striving to increase public awareness on donation of organs A meeting is planned with several religious heads in an effort to create more awareness among people on the issue.
