New Delhi: The Centre for Liver and Biliary Surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals,the pioneer in liver transplantation today hosted a two day Symposium onAdult and Pediatric Liver Transplantation followed by one day therapeutic endoscopy workshop. The symposium was attended by the President of International Liver transplant Society, experts from around the globe as well as leading doctors, surgeons and international facultyfrom over 20 countries including USA, UK, Japan, Belgium, Myanmar, Kenya, Malaysia, Singapore, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Brazil.
The two-day symposium discussed issues relating to improving outcome in liver transplantation, decreasing side effects from anti rejection medication, decreasing recurrence post transplant for HCC and highlighted future areas of research such as development of immune tolerance post transplant and decreasing ischemia reperfusion injury. Interactive and practical learning experiences via lectures, panel discussion and video demonstration of procedures were held.As liver transplant is an evolving discipline in India, the Congress was well attended by transplant physicians from all over India.
This symposiumprovided an opportunity for experts from around the world to discuss how to improve outcome after living donor liver transplant and focus on creating awareness on the great need for cadaveric organ donation including donation after cardiac arrest. The role of imaging post liver transplant to detect complications was highlighted. Prof. Anil Dhawan MD from King’s College Hospital, Londonpresented his experience of liver regenerative protocols in Acute Liver Failure. Prof Ben-HurFerrazNetofrom Brazil presented his work on Ischemia reperfusion injury. Panel discussions on complications after transplant such as altered sensorium, new onset cardiac dysfunction, nephrotoxicity and post-transplantdevelopment of malignancy were discussed in order to lay down guidelines for effective management.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, Honorable Minister of Union Health & Family Welfare said, “India has become the regional hub for liver transplant surgery and therefore the importance of regular meeting of experts from around the world is necessary so that there is no let up in the standard of care. The CLBS group should be applaudedfor organizing such a large international meeting with some of the best-known experts in the field and for provided training to surgeons and physicians from around the world.
Addressing the press meet, Dr Subash Gupta, Chief Transplant Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals Group and Director, CLBS commented, “This year the theme of the conference has been to improve outcomes in recipients, ensure donor safety and improve cadaveric donation rates. The Newer Centres presented their experience so that we could all learn from each other. As liver transplant is a multidisciplinary activity,parallel sessions on physiotherapy, transplant nursing and transplant coordinating were also held”.
