Mumbai: An 84-year-old lady from Rajasthan was relieved of months of excruciating pain after a neurosurgerysurgery at Nanavati super speciality hospital.

LatifaBai had undergone a dental surgery and extracted her tooth five months ago in Rajasthan’s Baran district. Following the surgery, she suffered from a neurological condition called trigeminal neuralgia – severe pain that occurs due to a damaged nerve – because of which she was unable to speak, brush, eat and was on IV fluids. She could not eat for many days due to shock-like pain and developed severe anaemia as well. Due to the poor diet her haemoglobin level came down and she was unable to walk or move. When she was taken to doctors in Kota (Rajasthan), they asked her relatives to prayer for her healing.

Then, a relative of hers in Mumbai advised her son to consult Dr Mohinish Bhatjiwale, Director (Neurosurgery) at Mumbai's Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital. She was transported from Rajasthan to Mumbai. Within a few minutes of conducting a minimally invasive procedure of radiofrequency ablation of the trigeminal nerve under local anaesthetic [as she was under the very high-risk category] in Nanavati, she started speaking, drinking and eating. She is now fully enjoying her stay in Mumbai with her grandchildren and plans to return to Rajasthan in the near future

Dr. Bhatjiwale for whom `a Neuralgia-Free India’ is a dream said that this is one of the most gratifying surgeries for Trigeminal Neuralgia and a boon especially for the elderly as open surgery carries more risk even from anaesthesia point of view. It saves hospital stay, cost and gives instant relief in over 97 percent cases, he said.
