Due to drastic changes in the life style of people, the district is witnessing more cases of diabetes. Recently, Abhaya Seva Society, a social organisation has conducted a survey in the district. According to the survey report, 17 to 20 per cent population in urban segments are affected by diabetes and 10 to 14 per cent in rural areas.

Earlier, diabetes used to be diagnosed in persons, who were discharging their duties by sitting most of the time in a day as they never indulged in physical activity. The survey found poor and middle-class people are also suffering from diabetes due to metabolic disorder. They are spending significant income to purchase medicines related to the diabetes.

Diabetologist Dr S Mahaboob Ali, who is treating diabetic patients in Kadapa city for the last two decades, said diabetes is not a disease but a metabolic disorder. “Diabetes will lead to failure of organs and even a person may lose life if not detected at an early stage,” he added.

The doctor said Kadapa is a backward district comparing with other districts in the state and majority people are dependent on farming which involves physical work.
Mahabood Ali stated that farmers affected by diabetes has surprised him. K Venkataramanaiah of NGO Colony in Kadapa city said that three persons including his 55-year-old mother in his family are suffering from diabetes for the last 10 years. “I am spending not less than Rs 6,000 on medicines for diabetes and other diseases every month,” he lamented. What is more worrying is that 1.5 per cent children in the age group of 1 and 10 are diabetic in the district and 4 per cent in the age group of 17 and 25.

According to a member of the Kadapa District Chemists and Druggists Association, 15.5 lakh units of diabetic medicines are being sold every month through 1,000 outlets across the district. He stated that sale of medicines related to the diabetes had risen steadily from 2004. The sales turnover per month had increased from Rs 3 lakh in 2004 to Rs 15 lakh in 2017.

Meanwhile, doctors suggesting diabetic patients to consume brown rice. The brown rice contains large quantity of fiber contents which can be easily digestible and maintains sugar levels in body.
