As DJ Mick Boogie makes his maiden visit to Hyderabad during his tour to India, he shares his thoughts on music and how technology is important to master the craft of DJing.

It was one of the life time experiences for Hyderabadi party folks as Mick Boogie; the DJ and mixtape composer came all the way from New York. He performed on for Micromax VH1 Hip Hop Hustle at Over the Moon, Jubilee Hills on Wednesday.

“DJing is the only area where I can explore all genres of music from hip-hop, rock to various other forms that I can fuse to create something new out of it,” said the DJ who trained himself on piano and drums before stepped into Hip-Hop music when he was 17-years-old. “I think my formal music training on two different instruments make my foundation strong in rhythm and harmony that helped me to grow my musical sense,” he said.

DJing is a musical art that involves technology and music, how important is it to know the technical part of it? “It is important to know and understand the technical part of DJing, as we are handling different gadgets, mixing style and modern technology. Having said that, I would like to mention that that it is not the most important part as I used to think in my early days,” answered the Dj who does not plan the play list before the show. He believes to go with the flow of listeners who are present there during the party.

“Well, this is my first time ever performance in India, so playing popular hip-hop numbers would be the best way to entertain my audience, that they can relate with; rest of it would be interactive” he shared. Boogie, who is highly influenced by 90’s hip hop music and is working with Coldplay, Jay-Z, released many mix-tapes like The Pre-up (2006), Detention (2007), The MCEO Mixtape (2008) which was a collaboration with Talib Kweli. He also released a mix-tape called ‘Grand Royal’ that reflects his inspirations from induction of the Beastie Boys' into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

It is essential for any youngster to have an in-depth understanding of both aspects of Djing-technical and creativity. As he adds, “Mustering technical part would be pointless if you do have knowledge in different genres of music that you can mix and play. One has to have the idea of combination of musical element that creates a good sound. And at the end of it, it’s your passion for music that drives you to go deeper into music and develop the sense of it.”
