Drug peddlers are constantly re-inventing themselves to stay off the hook. With Christmas and New Year hardly days away, the peddlers are now smuggling heroin through books and via shipments. The city police are on alert after special cell of the Delhi Police busted an international drug racket

On Saturday night, special cell of the Delhi Police busted an international drug racket on the outskirts of New Delhi. Venugopal Reddy, a key operative was arrested. Police in twin cities are on alert post the arrest, as the key operative has strong connections in the city. With Christmas and New Year hardly days away, police are keeping a strict vigil on the movement of narcotics in and out of the city.

Narcotics and Psychotropics

There are two kinds of drugs-Narcotics and Psychotropics. Narcotics come from trees where as psychotropics are artificially made. Ganja, opium, cocaine, cheras, hashish, bhang, brown sugar, heroin are narcotics, whereas ketamine, ephedrine and pethidine are psychotropics. The gang busted in New Delhi is notorious for peddling heroin. Initial investigation revealed that these drugs were pushed from Pakistan and Afghanistan borders and the arrested peddle them into Andhra Pradesh. They are then illegally transported to Sri Lanka.

New mechanism for drug transport: books

With the increase in cross border vigil, the conduits/ regulators of drug rackets are finding new ways to smuggle drugs. Off late heroin is smuggled through books and shipment. Heroin is being peddled from Afghanistan and Pakistan borders and from overseas like Thailand and South America. Heroin is attached to the spine of the book and is re-cased and bound. Police sources say that around 200 grams of heroin are peddled through books. The books are then sent via shipments to the conduits and regulators. Once these books reach them, the heroin is dusted onto a tissue paper and then repacked again.

Meteoric demand onweekends

Reports suggest that the demand for drugs is very high on weekends and the drugs are only sold to known customers from 9pm to 3am. There are unconfirmed reports of usage and peddling of drugs in a few pubs, farmhouses and resorts on outskirts of the city. One gram of heroin is sold for anywhere between Rs 11,000 to Rs 18,000. The street names of these drugs are Black Tra, Chiva, Negra and Harse. It is reported that after Delhi and Mumbai, Hyderabad has more drug addicts.

In an earlier interview with Hyderabad Hans, Anjani Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) commenting on increased drug sales in the city said, “There is an increase in drug peddling as Christmas and New Year are near. We have increased our patrolling and are inspecting all the suspected rave parties to crack down on drug peddling.”
