Justice P Naveen Rao of the AP High Court, on Friday, directed the Central Government Cabinet Secretary and Station/Sector Commander, not to impose any restriction on free flow of traffic in five major roads passing through the cantonment area of Secunderabad, till March 6.

The roads are SP Road/East Marredpally towards Allahabad Gate (Entrancement Road), from Secunderabad Club, Picket/West Marredpally towards Wellington Enclave (Wellington Road), from Safilguda junction towards Safilguda railway crossing (Ordnance road) and Tirumulgiri Hanuman temple to Gough road (Mornington Road) and Kendriya Vidyalaya crossing to East/West Marredpally (Gough Road).

The judge was dealing with two writ petitions filed by Krishna Vijay Rao and G Surya Narayana Reddy. The petitioners complained that they were regular commuters on the roads of Cantonment area and that there was no provision under the Cantonment Act to close the roads permanently except to close temporarily for the purpose of carrying out works relating to drainage, water supply or lightening or any other work as per Section 258 of the Act.

The petitioners contended that blocking the flow of traffic would cause huge inconvenience to students, ordinary citizens and patients as the said roads were used for decades by commuters. The judge while passing the interim order issued notices to the respondents to file their respective counters.

Meanwhile, the army authorities in Secunderabad have planned to hold a meeting with the representatives of Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs) of areas adjoining Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) Centre, on Sunday, to discuss the issues relating to regulation of traffic on the internal roads of AOC Centre. The aim of the meeting is to address the concerns of the civil commuters using these roads while ensuring that the training and administration of the Army establishments are not affected adversely.

The army authorities have also scheduled to hold a joint meeting with the representatives of Civil Administration, Police, Secunderabad Cantonment Board and Defence Estate Officer in the first week of March to discuss further on this issue, finetune the traffic restrictions and to consider for infrastructural development of the existing alternative routes in the affected areas.
