A noted music director of several hit Hindi films like ‘Parineeta’, ‘3 Idiots’ and the upcoming ‘PK’, Shantanu Moitra speaks of his experience, working for the Telugu film.

It was while working for ‘Madras Cafe’ Shantanu got to see activist Sunita Krishanan and Krishna’s film. “Sunita is my friend. I told her if she ever needs any assistance, I could help her. One day I got a call from her when I was busy with my ‘Madras Café’. She showed me the film, ‘Naa Bangaru Talli’ and I just got connected with the film and that’s how I happened to work for it.”

Moitra started his career with popular jingle ‘Bole Mere Lips I Love Uncle Chips’ for an advertisement. He composed music for Bollywood hit movies like ‘Parineeta’, ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’, ‘Raajneeti’, ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Booby Jasoos’, ‘Mardaani’ and also for ‘PK’ - an upcoming flick with Aamir Khan in the lead, which has already created a buzz.

When asked whether language was a barrier for composing music for ‘Naa Bangaru..’., he says, “I am a Bengali but I composed for Hindi films. We live in a cosmopolitan environment and language should not be an issue because language is for communication. I think visual medium is important for composing not the language. For this film, I used to understand through emotions and Rajesh, movie director used to help us.”

Shantanu says it was a challenging movie to do. “I composed for several hard core films but this story was heart touching. I want to do more films, which are challenging, like this one.”

He feels that it is a good idea to showcase social issues through movies. “Rajesh has come up with great idea and explored consequences of sex trafficking through his film. Even movies like ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and ‘3 Idiots’ were also based on the social issues. More movies like ‘Na BangaruTalli’ should be made,” he shares.

Steering the conversation towards the much awaited ‘PK’, he says, “Rajkumar Hirani has come up with a classic movie ‘PK’. It has been a long journey with him. we have been working together since ‘3 Idiots’. It’s always a major experience for me to work with him.”
