Swati Lakra, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes and SIT), is heading the recently formed SHE Team which aims to tackle the menace of eve-teasing in the city. In a shocking revelation, nearly 30 per cent of those detained by SHE teams since October, were middle-aged. Speaking to the Hyderabad Hans, Lakra exhorts the people to stand up against stalkers. She also spelt out the details of the proposed Act that is aimed at curbing harassment in public

Swati LakraShe Police teams are on the move ever since coming into being two months back. Aimed at curbing eve-teasing, the team members operate in strategic locations and public places like bus terminals, railway stations, hostels, and malls to nab stalkers and those harassing women.

Elaborating on the specific activities, Lakra says, “Men found guilty of harassing women will be brought to the Central Crime Station (CCS) and counselled in the presence of their family members. In case the culprit repeats the crime, cases will be slapped under the stringent Nirbhaya Act.”

The plain-clothed members (five in each of the 100 teams) will be on constant lookout for stalkers and potential trouble-makers. Till date, 80 people have been detained of which 16 have been produced before the court of law. Six have been imprisoned. Statistics indicate that nearly 30 per cent of the offenders were middle-aged.

To raise awareness, SHE Teams are hosting counselling and awareness camps in women hostels, schools and colleges. “The city police is also preparing a draft for an Act to check harassment in public places by incorporating provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Anti-Ragging Act and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Sexual Harassment Act. The draft would be sent to the government for its approval soon,” she said.

Swati appealed to women in the city to be bold and revolt against stalkers by dialing 100. The team will jump into action immediately and the complainant’s name and identity would be kept confidential and remain unknown to the immediate family.

On the Rohtak sisters incident, Lakra said, “stalkers are cowards. If women are alert and retaliate they will run away from the spot. The two sisters have a set fine example for every woman in the country with their acts of valour (their second in a month). I am hopeful that the day is not far-off when women can walk on the road at midnight without any fear.”
