Swami Vivekananda has been a source of inspiration to many youngsters across the globe. Taking a cue from this, director of the National Award winning animated film ‘Sound of Joy’, Sukankan Roy showcased the story of Biley, young Swami Vivekanand and his inner strength and self belief.

The movie revolves around Joy, a spirited boy, who wants to impress the world with his prowess of violin. Like other kids he wants to get a shortcut to fame. While he is still in the learning phase he gets easily carried away with small praises. He has a short span of attention which he improves taking inspiration from Biley’s stories.

“Joy is a huge fan of Biley and he considers him as his teacher. His life is centered on the teachings of Biley. It took me five years to research on childhood of Swami Vivekananda,” Sukankan Roy shares.

The 52-minute long film is produced by Aura Cinematics, an animation company based in Kolkata. The movie is presented by Ramakrishna Mission Belur and is financially assisted by Ministry of Culture. The animated feature bagged Best Animation Film, Best Animator and Best Direction at the 62nd National Awards.

“The film shows the modern crisis, which children are going through. They are after the fantasy dream. Every kid wants to be a Sachin Tendulkar or Shah Rukh Khan or Sania Mirza, not because for love of their talent but to be celebrities. This film shows that practice hard and excel, success will automatically follow. Children should pursue dreams not fantasy dreams,” the director avers.

The character of the “Master”, who is the source of Biley’s stories to the kids bears an uncanny resemblance to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, however, the director says it was an unintentional resemblance.

“We realised halfway that Master looks similar to Abdul Kalam sir, so we could not change it. However, I am glad that the character looks like Abdul Kalam and not any other politician,” Saukankan shares smilingly.

Talking about being featured in the 19th International Children’s Film Festival the director says, “This is my second time at the coveted film festival. First time I came as a film student and now as a filmmaker, the transition is unbelievable. I was in the auditorium when the movie was screened and the way clapped and cheered for the movie is more than National award.
