In people over 65 yrs age every second person will be on some form of arthritis treatment. Unfortunately some of these patients go on to develop severe arthritis of the knee joint where sometimes ‘Total Knee Replacement Surgery’ (TKR) is the only choice.

Worldwide every year millions of TKRs are performed. In India yearly more than 1 lakh surgeries are performed and the number is rising. In general TKRs are very successful in giving good pain relief and allowing the patients to perform day-to-day activities but there is a high degree of dissatisfaction remains because the joint doesn’t feel normal and they cannot do high demand activities.

Traditionally all the existing designs of TKR prosthesis were based on poor understanding of the knee biomechanics and they are designed as simple hinge joints without recreating the complex kinematics of natural knee. This results in less bending of the knee, some pain and weakness, easy tiredness of the knee muscles and the inability to do high demand activities like sports, running, carrying heavy objects etc.
