The Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ICOG) along with the Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Societies of India (FOGSI) launched the ‘Dheera’ initiative on Saturday in order to address growing Violence Against Women (VAW).

The initiative started with the Cyclothon, which was flaged off by Swati Lakra, Additional Commissioner (Crimes and SIT), Government of Telangana, Lalitha Kumaramangalam, Chairperson, National Commission for Women and actress Lavanya Tripathi.

Later, around 300 enthusiastic students and young professionals cycled away shouting the motto ‘Break the silence and end the violence against women’.

Earlier, a two-day national conference was held on the topic ‘Fertility Regulation and Women’s Health’. In the conference gynaecologists shared their experience to educate women about domestic violence and fertility issues.

Speaking on the occasion Lalitha Kumaramangalam said, “Today, violence against women is endemic. We have found that domestic violence is happening against women around the world every day. In the offices and travelling they are abused.

In most of the rape cases the accused is escaping without punishment. It is also sad that the doctors are rude to victims of rape in many cases. Most women will not come out to say that they are victims of violence.

Social workers and doctors should take the responsibility of identifying the victims in the violence cases. Every victim has to come forward to solve this issue. We always said that our country has 65 per cent of people who are youth and we have great opportunity in development. But how can a country develop without respecting the women?”

Founder of SHE Teams, Swati Lakra said, “The government started SHE teams and BHAROSA teams to protect women. Over the two-and-half years we caught more than 600 persons red-handed while eve-teasing. We have initiated ‘Hawk Eye-Telangana’ police app to prevent violence against women.

We have WhatsApp number, Twitter and Facebook page for public use. We also book persons under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act, who involve in more than three eve-teasing crimes. Our main aim is ‘a victim should not be revictimised.”

“I’m really happy to be a part of this initiative. We have to teach coming generations about the importance of women. With the help of media, many people came here to talk about the issue,” said Lavanya.

Tripurana Venkataratnam, Women’s Commission Chairperson, Hyderabad, Dr C N Purandare, President FIGO, Dr Alka Kriplani, president FOGSI, Dr Krishnendu Gupta, chairperson ICOG and Dr Shantha Kumari secretary ICOG were among those who attended and shared their views on the initiative.
