Ben Judah, a British-French journalist and author, was in the city on Tuesday. He shared his views on Soviet Union, Trump, Brexit and more in a discussion organised by Hyd-Park at Lamakaan, Banjara Hills.
Judah began his career in Russia as a reporter for Reuters in Moscow, travelling widely in Russia and the former Soviet Union. As a conflict reporter, he covered the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, the 2010 Kyrgyz Revolution and the 2011 Tunisian Revolution. He also wrote two books – ‘Fragile Empire’ and ‘This Is London’.
Sharing about the Soviet Union he said, “Collapse of the Soviet Union was also a collapse of economy of Russia. The Soviet Union was dissolved in 1990’s and at that time Russians believed that they have good days to come within 18 months but that did not happen. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, they were strong in every aspect. President Vladimir Putin changed the policies in Russia.”
Speaking about the recent USA elections, he said “Hillary Clinton has got more votes than Donald Trump but at the end, Trump won. Trump speeches about giving priority of jobs to the Americans changed the entire scenario.
The Americans thought that their condition becomes even worse if Trump lost in elections. They believe that Trump will provide jobs for them and develop the US. The swing states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania are also the main reason for Trump’s triumph.”
About India, he stated that after Indian independence one or two British politicians wanted to conquer India again. “In the middle of the 19th century, England did not allow even one percentage of immigration into their country. Only 20 thousand non-white people lived in England after Second World War.
Later, the rules were changed and people got permission to go anywhere. Every country has one political tradition but India has multiple political traditions. The 21st century is all about migration and mobility.
Managing migration is important,” he shared. He also said that the British people never wanted to be a part of the European Union.
About his new book he said, “With ‘This Is London’, I wanted to showcase how the new London was different from other cities. This has various stories of migrants and how they suffered for jobs.”
