Yuvakalavahini in association with Department of Language and Culture, Government of Telangana organised a three-day exhibition of Handicrafts display 'Srujana-Kandepi Kalakrutulu' on Wednesday at Ravindra Bharati. KV Ramana Chary, IAS (Rtd) inaugurated the exhibition.

Artist Kandepi Rani Prasad, who is displaying dolls made of daily wastage said, “I did my PHD in Telugu literature. I am from Karimnagar district. This is my first exhibition in Hyderabad. Since my childhood, I had an interest in handicrafts and from 1993 I started working with these art forms. The dolls which I am displaying in the exhibition are made from waste materials like ‘Jalleda’, ‘Matchsticks’, ‘Carbon paper’, etc.”

Rani is imparting a message of environmental responsibility with her works by making items like wall hangings and toys from discarded, non-toxic hospital waste like tablet strips, injection bottle nibs, etc. “I got the inspiration to do these works when I saw the waste generated from hospitals. I would like to reach out to other housewives like me and encourage them to make use of their free time for betterment environment.”

“We have our own hospital in Karimnagar and my husband is a child specialist. Many children come to the hospital for checkups and sometimes they have to wait for their turn so we put up some art forms in the hospital premises to give them a positive impact and teach them about protecting the environment,” she concludes.
