More than 5,000 enthusiastic people participated in the ‘Yashoda Cancer Awareness 5K Run and Bike Rally’ that began at Saroornagar stadium on Sunday. The event, which was organised as part of ‘World Cancer Day’, was flagged off by GHMC Mayor Bonthu Rammohan in the presence of MD of the Hospitals Dr GS Rao and other local public representatives.

Congratulating the organisers, Rammohan said that the government is determined to improve the standards of healthcare sector. “Cancer is causing more panic than all diseases and is tormenting mankind today. India and Telangana State in particular has a high burden of cancer,” said the Mayor.

Dr Rao added, “It is estimated that around 10 lakh people are diagnosed with cancer every year and this number could rise significantly if preventive measures are not taken. A major issue with the disease is that people do not realise the symptoms of cancer until it is too late and most patients do not seek help until the disease has reached a more advanced stage.”

“Youth and students are pivotal in spreading awareness among the public effectively. Cancer is a no more a deadly disease it’s curable. This is the main objective of ‘Yashoda Cancer Awareness Walk’,” he said. As part of Cancer Awareness programme Yashoda Hospitals - Malakpet is offering special package for screening at a discounted price of Rs 999. This offer is valid till February 28.
