US Consulate General, Hyderabad and FICCI FLO organised a talk of well known Emmy-nominated actress and food expert Padma Lakshmi with Hyderabad-based fashion designer Shilpa Reddy revolving around the books ‘ Love ,Loss and What we ate: A memoir’ and ‘The Encyclopedia of Spices and Herbs: An essential guide to the flavors of the world’. Consul General Katherine Hadda set the tone for the evening talk by explaining the activities of the US Consulate in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Bhubaneswar.

Padma Lakshmi spoke about the golden olden days when as a young kid she would fly alone from America to Chennai with a stopover at Singapore. And says, “I think every young individual should travel as much as possible, it makes you good at adapting to situations. My family was always obsessed with food. At any given point of time, a meal used to get cooked for at least ten people. Every woman at home would be in the kitchen. And over a period of time, I have become a ‘Super Taster’. This is like a certain gift and I, therefore, got involved in the culinary field. I love street food,”

She has a word of caution for the children. “Child safety is a very important issue globally. Every child has a right to physical privacy. Every human being deserves autonomy over their body. There is no need to fear, but it is important to protect oneself. I always tell children that if they feel any ‘wrong touch’ over the body, they must immediately ‘scream’, make a loud noise or rush to the next room or open space” cautions Padma Lakshmi.

“As far as my relationships with men in my life, I always had a very deep and moving relationship with all of them. There have been moments where I felt mentored and each relationship taught me something for the good. I slowly began to understand that it was important to step into the other person’s shoes to understand the perspective of behaviour at the time. Many times, it’s possible that even I may have reacted on the spur of the moment thinking it to be the only right way.

I hope each of them has forgiven me also in the same manner that I feel obliged about their contribution in making me what I am today. Every person is beautiful and has something extraordinary in them. A good deal is not when one person gets what he or she wants in a relationship. It’s a good deal when both get something or a little bit of what they aspire to get out of the relationship. One has to take rejection in life and I am happy to have moved away from modeling.

After all, this is all about business, and everyone would like to take along with them ‘what sells for them’. The female form is the most beautiful thing on this earth. But racism and colour prejudice should not be a part of life for anyone. No one chooses their country or colour at the time they are born. How do you think these things are important and not what you do?” signs off Padma Lakshmi.
