South Indian Cultural Association (SICA) recently held second annual national level Bharatanatyam competition for young artistes at Ravindra Bharathi. This was an endowment by senior guru Hemamalini Arni. The event attracted participation from all over India like Hyderabad, Pune, Bangalore, Mumbai, Raipur, Chennai and Bhilai participated in the event.

Most of the participants chose to present part of a varnam as the time given for each was around 20 minutes. Papanasam Sivam compositions were the choice of many of the aspiring youngsters. There was a rich and varied display of styles learnt from various gurus, which enabled the audience to observe the hallmark of each variation. Harini Jeevitha from Chennai came first followed by Priyanjali Rao from Mumbai.

The consolation prize was awarded to Shreya Sridhar from Hyderabad, who is the student of Hemamalini Arni. Despite being the youngest contestant, her talent was quite striking. The presentation of the silver cup and a full-fledged dance programme would be the winner's due at a later time to be announced. The judges were renowned mridangam maestro Karra Srinivas, Dr Lakshmi and Subhashini Giridhar.
