Pandit Jasraj said, “Devayani truly represented an Indian mind and body and would have been born in France just by chance.” He further added that she is a true Indian from heart and mind. Devayani also performed a ‘Varnam’, followed by a ‘Padam’ “Taaye Yashoda”.

Devayani, the Bharatanatyam dancer born in France and settled in New Delhi was awarded the ‘Rotary Pandit Jasraj Award for Cross Cultural Understanding’ at Phoenix Arena, HITEC City. This ‘Padam’ describes the mischief of young Lord Krishna. The ‘Gopis’ tell his mother Yashoda, wife of King Nandagopa about the antics of ‘Little Krishna’.

When the ‘Gopis’ take him to be a young boy and welcome him, Krishna plants a kiss on their cheeks embarrassing them. He further steals the butter, which is carefully put out of bounds for any young child. For Devayani, Indian dance has been a medium to bring energy into life through a spiritual devotion.

Just watching a sequence of ‘Kalakshetra’ in a film inspired Devayani to pursue dance and make India her home. She was never happy with the thoughts and rules of society in her homeland and felt that there was true freedom for a human being through the pursuit of Indian culture.
