Sindhi Colony, one of the thickly populated areas in Secunderabad is facing a severe sewage problem. The most affected are residents of Laxmi Narayan Colony. People are so fed up with the stench that many have vacated their houses.

The problem of overflowing sewage started six months ago but in the last two months the drainage water started entering the houses. On Wednesday, a group of 15 women of Gagandeep building and Laxminarayan 12 stormed into the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSS&B) office seeking immediate measures to solve the problem.

The residents are fighting a losing battle against mosquitoes and filth. Usha Patel, an affected resident said, “It is impossible to get into our homes. The pathway is filled with sewage. We have been complaining for the last six months but the GHMC as well as the HMWSS&B did not respond.”

Staff at the Water Board says that the sewage pipes are clogged and work will begin soon. Vivek, a local informed, “Normally, overflowing sewage is common during monsoon but now there are no rains.”

“Even after lodging several complaints, the Water Board is impervious. The Water Board emergency teams to tackle overflowing drainage and manholes have failed in their duty,” he said.

Most of the children and elders are down with fever and people fear that they may get malaria. Navin, a local said that people who own houses have nowhere to go and are stuck.

Locals say that they have never seen workers from the Water Board do dredging. On Wednesday, the Water Board officials pacified the irate residents that work would be taken up at the earliest date.
