It is a known fact that the prevalence of Tuberculosis (TB) in India is high; and curbing of this contagious-in-nature disease is a priority in this country. While TB infection primarily affects the lungs’, there are extra-pulmonary TB instances which cause other types of damage/s in the body.

There are instances when TB reaches genitals in both men and women, leading to infertility. Dr Nirmala Agarwal of Juhi Fertility Centre in Hyderabad has cured both men and women suffering from TB, a cause that prevented them to have children.

M Saritha (32 yrs), married for over a decade failed to conceive. While she opted for many varieties of treatments over the years, the root cause for infertility was still in dark. After results of routine investigations exposed nothing, the patient was put through hysteroscopy examination, which revealed a small uterine cavity. Further biopsy into the pus formed in her body revealed that she is suffering from a kind of TB.

Dr Nirmala has put her through a special anti-TB therapy; and subsequent to undergoing treatment, Saritha conceived in her very first cycle. While the patient approached Dr Nirmala in January last year, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Commenting on the ailment and its cure, Dr Nirmala Agarwal, Founder of Juhi Fertility said, “Many times women who fail to conceive do not realise that they or their partners are suffering from some form of tuberculosis.

This ailment could be dormant in certain case, but affects the roots, leading to infertility. When a women fails to conceive for long, and other common ailments are ruled out, it is very important that the couple (both husband and wife) undergo investigations to check if they are suffering from any form of TB.”

Dr Nirmala further added, “TB which affects genitals is a matter of great concern in a family life. TB in a man could also lead to his wife not becoming pregnant for long after marriage. We have treated both women and men to help them overcome an ailment like this that constantly affects their life.”

In another case, Vikram (35 yrs) and his wife were unable to opt for a child even after over five years of married life. While the initial tests done on his wife and he produced normal results, the root cause could be identified only through X-Ray of chest of the husband.

The husband was put through the best anti-TB treatment, resulting in positive outcome. While this couple approach Dr Nirmala in February 2015, they had their baby in the early part of last year. In another interesting case, Dr Nirmala helped a patient suffering from genital TB to go for children, who turned out to be beautiful little twins.
