The excitement of salary deposited message was short lived for many in the city as a majority of ATMs were shut as there was no cash in the machines. This has become a norm in the first week of every month and neither bank managers nor RBI officials have an answer.

In the last two days people have been going to ATMs only to return disappointed. A bank manager of Andhra Bank in Marredpally said that RBI has to supply cash to the currency chest but there is no sufficient supply. In the meanwhile, citizens are left high and dry. Ram Mohan, a resident of Vijaynagar Colony said, “Even last month there was no cash in ATMs in the first week.

I have to pay so many bills and this month there are a lot of purchases to be made as the schools start after a short break. I returned twice from ATMS and had to take half a day’s work off only to go to the bank and withdraw cash.”

A majority of the 1,500 ATMs in the city did not have cash and cash chests of even the nationalised banks were empty. A Canara Bank official said that people also panic and withdraw more cash than is required in the first week. The situation would not come to this if people manage their money well.

However, citizens have their own version, Rekha, a content writer says that I should have the right to withdraw cash as and when I need. “Post demonetisation, the banks were flooded with funds so should they have a cash crunch?” she questioned.

In several ATMs in Marredpally, Saroornagar, Mallepally, Kukatpally, Central Excise Colony, Amberpet, Punjagutta, Somajiguda, Ameerpet and Srinagar Colony had ‘no cash’ boards.

A retired railway employee N B V R Murthy said, “I am not comfortable with Paytm option. Even using the ATM is something that I adopted recently after mush persuasion by my kids. The RBI is to blame for the situation.”

Requesting anonymity, a bank employee said that cash would be replenished soon but had no answer why every month in the first week the ATMs go dry. Ramulu, an attendant of a patient at Gandhi Hospital said that he has been making several rounds to different ATMs in Musheerabad but none had cash. “Luckily, a cousin who is a peon in a bank helped me get cash,” he added.
