Throwing caution to the winds and showing scant respect to the High Court orders, another structure is coming up at the mouth of the Hussain Sagar near Lumbini Park. The ground floor has been booked by a prominent baker; the first floor is to have a restaurant and the second a banquet hall. What is more toilets too have been built within the premises with the permission of HMDA.

The AP High Court order dated 15.6.2001 says, ‘No further permanent structures, including those involving commercial activities may be allowed to be raised on or near the water spread of catchment area.’ But, the restaurant is almost hugging the water.

M Veda Kumar, president, Forum for a Better Hyderabad says, “The Lake has already shrunk from 1664 hectares to 571.42 acres but still the government has not woken up. This is a clear violation of the High Court order.”

The lake is already polluted and it will add to add to it. “All the garbage and sewer will again enter the lake and with these structures coming up around the lake bed, it is only dwarfing the Buddha statue,” says Mohan, a social activist.

Sridharan, a resident of Domalguda says, “Eat Street and Jal Vihar too have been built with iron railings to counter any opposition by stating that the constructions are not permanent in nature and can be dismantled.

This structure too is being built with iron railings.” He asks, “The pollution they cause is to be seen and are not Eat Street and Jal Vihar now permanent?”

In 2000, the government proposed 21 projects around the lake but several PILs were filed and after a long delay the Supreme Court transferred the case to the then AP High Court.

A tourism department official says, “In spite of the stink thousands visit the Hussain Sagar and unless further encroachment is stopped and no more structures are allowed along the lake bed there is no hope for the lake.” Attempts to reach HMDA officials proved futile but the restaurant is nearing completion and is about to be opened.
