In a move to create awareness, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) informed locals of the cruel methods used by ‘Egg Industries’ to kill chicks. The event was part of the organisation’s attempt to promote ‘Vegan’ lifestyle.

Over the weekend Prasads Mall in Khairatabad played host to about a dozen children, volunteers of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who donned chick costumes and supported the cause by urging people to try ‘vegan’. The event was organised in light of a recent investigation of farms and hatcheries in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Children were dressed up in yellow chick outfits and were seen sitting at the entrance of the mall holding signboards with the words ‘Baby chicks are killed for eggs – try vegan’. Later, they were rewarded with stickers for their patience.

“If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everybody would be vegetarian. The investigation revealed that millions of male and unwanted chicks are ground up, drowned, burned, crushed, and even fed to other animals while still alive.

Males are considered useless in the egg industry as they do not lay eggs, and are bred for meat. Females are typically confined to cages barely larger than their own bodies and are slaughtered as soon as their egg production wanes,” said Ayushi Sharma, a Peta Indian Campaign assistant.
“Exploiting chickens for their eggs is not only cruel but also unnecessary,” said.

“As eggs are loaded with cholesterol and saturated fat, the best way to look after your health and protect hens at the same time is to go vegan,” she adds.
