Government high-handedness?

It seems like governing bodies formulate initiatives for beautification of the city, but take no care of the workers they employ towards it. Multiple incidents have been reported in The Hans India about the abysmal working conditions of contract workers cleaning lakes, but it seems like officials continue to ignore the importance of their health.

Yet another moment was observed on Thursday when contract workers were struggling to clean Hussainsagar in the blazing heat. Forget heat-protective gear, the workers did not even have gloves or shoes!

When asked about the same, an HMDA official said that cleaning of Hussainsagar is given to a contractor and it is their duty to provide gloves and shoes to the workers. “But the workers are not comfortable using shoes and gloves,” she said. However, the official assured that she would look into the matter.
