The Rs 5 Bhojanam Scheme is definitely helping the daily wage workers like auto drivers, security guards, construction laborers, etc of the city. This scheme which feeds almost 15,000 people daily with 50 centers all across the city has no provision for shelter or even a specified area where people can gather and eat leaving them scattered on the footpaths and burning under the hot sun while they try to enjoy their meals.

Every center caters to feed 300 people on a daily basis and considering this number it can be difficult to provide a shelter for everyone but that shouldn’t stand as a reason for not providing a shelter considering the season with temperature going up to 43 degree Celsius.

Moreover it is a moving crowd and every individual might hardly take 10-15min to finish their meal. “I hardly care what I am eating. All I am worried about is how long before I can eat and get back to work as eating while standing in the hot sun seems like a more difficult job than riding my auto every day,” says Ashok, a 43-year-old auto driver around cloak tower.

Not providing a specific area for the people to eat allows them to scatter in search of shelter giving rise to open littering all around the area. People leave their plates where they eat as they don’t find any bins around that place.

The only place with a bin is right next to the meal center which usually gets over crowded with people gathering around the bin leaving them to eat in an unhygienic environment.

The meal usually consists of Lentils, rice and aloo curry with a water packet for which they are charged Rs. 5. A few places do not provide water packets while people go for their second round of the Rs. 5 meal.

“It looks like they give us the water packets only to wash our hands and not to drink as we aren’t given a water packet if we buy a second round of meals saying we already have a packet to wash our hands.

They only give the packet once and twice if there isn’t any water to wash our hands,” Says shivayya (32) who seemed really agitated when was denied another water packet.
