In an attempt to reduce garbage from our daily usage, a new initiative ‘Swacha Graha Hyderabad Chapter’ was launched by ED Vijaya Raju, Deputy Commissioner, Circle-18, over the weekend at Tarnaka Welfare Association Park.

Swacha Graha campaign is a platform that was started in 2009 in Bangalore to create a movement, through a collaborative approach between Civil Society Organisations (CSO), Citizens, Corporates and Government to control the burgeoning problem of solid waste.

“We are noticing rising temperatures every year. This is all due to our own ignorance. Every day in Hyderabad 5,000 tonnes of home wastage gets generated and no one indulges in recycling of waste.

In the process, all the garbage is sent to dump yards and more than 300 acres of land in the city is being used to dump the garbage. Residents in surrounding areas of the dump yards face severe problems like water-borne diseases, dengue, malaria, etc,” Aarthi, a member of Swacha Graha team, said.

“To overcome this problem, we are introducing a new concept ‘Waste Bucket Challenge’. In this challenge, everyone has to save their one week’s home wastage and after a week, the Swacha Graha members will collect all that waste and recycle it,” Aarthi added.

ED Vijaya Raju, Deputy Commissioner, Circle – 18, said, “This is a great initiative and everyone must follow it. We are generating this daily waste and we have to segregate it. We have to maintain a good system to overcome this problem.

The Waste Bucket Challenge is a great concept and I’m requesting people of Hyderabad to share it with friends. It is also sad that we have enough technology to send rockets into the space but at the same time we have no proper plans to recycle the wastage,” Dr GV Ramanjaneyulu, Executive Director of Centre for Sustainable Agriculture also participated in the event.
