The fourth biennial conference of ‘Indian Motility and Functional Disease Association’ concluded at KIMS Hospitals in Secunderabad on Sunday.

The fourth biennial conference of ‘Indian Motility and Functional Disease Association’ concluded at KIMS Hospitals in Secunderabad on Sunday. Organised by the Department of Gastroenterology the two-day conference had about 200 gastroenterologists participating from all over the nation while speakers came from countries such as USA, South Korea and Australia.

The conference was themed ‘Frontiers and Future perspectives in GI Physiology and Functional GI Diseases’. Aptly, the event deliberated on abnormalities that are not often discussed among communities as well as the medical fraternity.

Inaugurating the conference, Dr Bhaskar Rao, MD and CEO of KIMS Hospitals said the programme would help for development of better management protocols in area of neurogastroenterology and GI motility “This conference will give an opportunity to discuss the most controversial clinical issue in GI motility and functional GI disease and help the delegates to update their knowledge in the recent research in the field,” Dr Rao added.

He said, “Disorders of the gastrointestinal tract are caused due to abnormal motility of the muscles of digestive tract.” Dr Geoffrey Hebbard from Australia spoke about the latest development in the diagnosis of GERD (entry of acid into food pipe, which causes heartburn). Professor Uday C Ghoshal from Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) spoke about the motility disorder and functional bowel disease in India, and Dr Kok Ann Gwee from Singapore spoke about these aspects in Asia.

There was a special session on paediatric GI disorders and a session was dedicated to constipation, which is a very common problem in the general population. On the occasion, international trends and practices were discussed while special mentions were made on lifestyle, diet and stress management to checkmate motility issues. A symposium was held on bloating, which is one of the common symptoms among Indians due to rich fiber content in the diet. There was a discussion on the dietary changes in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
