The Modi-inspired ‘beti bachao’ and ‘end child marriages’ initiatives are to soon echo in the interiors of the district, thanks to a full-scale awareness campaign being undertaken at the behest of Hyderabad District Collectorate!

‘Prachara Radham’ that was launched on May 10 will traverse through all notified slums. It is specifically aimed at creating awareness on societal taboos and women-related issues, particularly where she is victimized by the society.

The awareness campaign will also cover sensitive issues like women harassment, women rights, child rights and compulsory registration under Marriage Act.

Giving details about Prachara Radham, GK Sunanda, district welfare officer, Women, Children, Disabled and Senior Citizen, said, “In the first phase vans with banners will visit slums. Anganwadi workers, women living in slums and the general public would be sensitised on important issues pertaining to women.”

She lamented that even in this age, many women are oblivious of the fact that marrying off daughters below the age of 18 (minors) was a heinous crime that warranted jail term and attracted a penalty of up to Rs one lakh.

The main purpose of making registration of marriages mandatory was to ensure that the families get the benefits of government schemes and ending bigamy, among other things.
