The annual summer camps of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) culminated on a spectacular note at Victory Play Ground (VPG) late Wednesday.

The annual summer camps of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) culminated on a spectacular note at Victory Play Ground (VPG) late Wednesday.

M Mamatha Gupta, Corporator, Gunfoundry Division declared the 2017 edition closed the camps at a colourful note that had the participation of senior Corporation officials, coaches, budding sportspersons and from the Sports wing of the civic body, which conducts the camps that have been growing in popularity by the year.

Curtains came down after nearly 3,500 smartly dressed children, drawn from various disciplines, participated in a well-coordinated march past that won the appreciation of the sizeable gathering that had assembled for the programme, which also was the final leg of the Central Zone venues.

Giving zest to the evening was a fine display of acrobatics, martial arts and gymnastic exercises that had the people mesmerized because they were being performed by prodigies in their restive fields of expertise.

Like every year, the best march past was rewarded with prizes. VPG cricket ground’s team took the best Central Zone honours in the march past category while the best overall for the year was won by the kho-kho ground at Frobel’s High School in Malkajgiri.

The march past toppers for Central Zone: 1. VPG (Cricket), 2. Ameerpet Playground (Roller skating), 3. VPG (Roller Skating), Special prize Amberpet Playground (Hockey).

Overall march past winners: 1. Frobel’s High School, Malkajgiri (Kho-kho), 2. Satya Sai Vidya Niketan High School, Ramantapur, 3. Lalapet Sports Complex (Shuttle).

Speaking on the occasion, Harichandana Dasari, Zonal Commissioner (Central Zone) praised the sports division of GHMC for the meticulous and diligent manner they have been conducting such camps for several decades uninterrupted.

She said it was a tribute to their commitment that was helping thousands of children to not only firm up their talent but also envision a career in sports. Corporators J Hemalatha Yadav, Chaitanya Kanna and M Rajender Yadav graced the occasion.

Earlier, Dr SR Premraj, Officer on Special Duty (Sports), GHMC spoke about their journey while G Umesh, Assistant Director of Sports, Central Zone, proposed the vote of thanks.
