Just two days after the Ministry of Defence (MoD) communique to keep the roads in the Secunderabad Cantonment open for civilians, the jawans at Military Hospital stopped commuters who were not wearing helmets to return.

Anapurna, a resident of Ramakrishnapuram said, “This is just vindictive nature. All these days the Army did not mind, all of a sudden they started frisking commuters. I was going to the hospital at 12 noon and the jawan insisted I return.”

Another resident of A S Rao Nagar said, “The Army has all the right to question people in their jurisdiction but in an RTI it was found that the Army claims several roads that do not belong to the Local Military Authority (LMA) how does one explain that?”

The Army on its part says that the troops keep moving from one point to another and there is every chance of accidents. A senior officer posted at Gough Road said that the civilians need to cooperate with us as it is for their own safety.

Anand Rao, a resident of Malkajgiri however says, “The Army does not insist on helmets consistently, they do it whenever they like.”
