A 56yrs old patient who was diagnosed in 2011 with heart failure and was advised at other hospitals for heart transplant as the condition worsened, got new lease of life at MaxCure, Hyderabad without a transplant.

The patient, Jahangir was suffering from intraclatch heart failure. Heart failure is a condition of the heart where the blood pumping from the heart is not adequate. In this case, the patient had multiple problems like shortness of breath, fatigue due to poor pumping function of the heart, perfusion to other organs.

In 2011 with his condition of poor heart function with ejection fraction of 40 per cent, the patient was advised only medical management and some life style modifications like quit smoking, pan etc. However, the patient was not on regular medication which further deteriorated his condition further.

Speaking at the press meet, Dr Satya Sridhar Kale, Consultant Cardio Thoracic Surgeon at MaxCure, said, “When he visited MaxCure, his heart condition was bad with pumping function of 32 per cent. Also, his heart got enlarged considerably causing mitral valve dysfunction causing mitral regurgitation.

Patient had all the problems of heart failure. We had planned surgery to correct all the problems causing his heart failure. We restored the shape of heart to near normalcy. We have also repaired the mitral valve using ring to revert valve leak. Also, we restored the blood supply through bypass.”

“Specialty of this case is that, generallyin these types of cases only transplant is an option. Yet considering his age and financial status,we opted for non-transplant procedure for him correcting all the associated structural changing heart failure successfully,”he added.

Heart failure effects 10million i.e. 0.9 per cent of total population. Risk factors for heart failure, coronary artery disease, Hyper tension, diabetes,Rheumatic heart disease. This is seen 43 per cent in Woman and 57 per cent in Men. Estimated mortality Heart Failures 0.1-0.16 million individuals/year.
