A 11 yr old boy, James Raju came to MaxCure with complaints of hump over the back. The team of surgeons at MaxCure have performed a life changing surgery to correct the spine of the boy.

This boy had a hump in the mid and lower back region which was increasing gradually. Due to the deformity of spine, there was no much space for lungs and abdominal organs causing shortness of breath on walking for long distances and climbing stairs. The boy was unable to enjoy his childhood.

Doctors have evaluated the case with x rays and MRI scans. On physical examination of the child, the doctors found a big hump in the lower and mid back with bend towards left side.

There were also some black spots on body called as café au laid spots. His condition is known as neurofibromatosis kyphoscoliosisThoraclumbar spine. It needs surgical stabilisation because the deformity will continue to progress in future.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Surya Prakash, Consultant spine surgeon at MaxCure says, “As the patient is young and patient’s bones are deformed which can’t support good number of screws from back, we have decided to operate from front and back.

Other reason to operate front and back is to promote bony union which is compromised in neurofibromatosis. We have decided to operate from front and back.”

“The surgery was smooth and uneventful and the boy was discharged within one week. This is a very complicated operation. In this there is a risk of injury to lungs and major abdominal organs.

Once we finished anterior procedure we did posterior (back) surgery on same day. After finishing anterior surgery, we have also performed posterior surgery.

Posterior surgery is called as kyphoscoliosiscorrection+posterior -instrumentation+posterior spinal fusion. This surgery has a high risk of paralysis during correction of the deformity.

To prevent this complication, we used neuro monitoring which monitors the nerves when correcting deformity,” he added.

Both surgeries went on successfully. Patient discharged after 1 week. Surgery was performed on December 29. Now 5 months after surgery patient is doing very good.

Doctors who were involved in the surgery are, Dr Surya Prakash, Dr Sridhar, Dr Pramod , Dr Akhilesh, Dr Vijay.
