Dr J Shiv Kumar, Chief of Cardiology and Director, Cardiac Cath Lab, Apollo Hospitals delivered the 260th Monthly Health Lecture of the Public Garden Walkers' Association on ‘Attack the Heart Attack: Be wise - Heart Wise’ on Sunday at Public Gardens.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Shiv Kumar said, Cardiovascular disease is the No.1 cause of death in our country and the statistics on the disease is alarming. It accounts for approximately 23 per cent of deaths in a year, about three crores of people in the country are suffering from Coronary Artery Disease and nearly 30 lakh people suffer from Heart Attack every year.

Coronary Artery Disease has become an epidemic in this country. Unfortunately, our country spends only 2 per cent of the GDP on health care and even this meagerfunding is utilised mainly for primary health care and fighting communicable diseases. To fight this menace, we have to develop some strategies to provide timely and effective medical care at an affordable price.

Elaborating further he said the following measures need to be considered on a war footing to gain a grip on the disease,
• Heart Attack should be treated as a public health initiative and all the stake holders should be engaged to seek logistic and medical support.
• We must improve ambulance care with a centralized ambulance system which shall provide qualitative and quantitative service.
• Pre-Hospital alerts like ECG transmission by smart phone should be made possible.
• Consider Tele medicine to increase access, accuracy and remote guidance of Heart Attack management.
• Educating the patient is a corner stone of whole treatment and management.
