Young boy from Bidar had got his right hand cut in an accident. He was taken to a local hospital where he was advised to go to the city for better medical attention.

Throughout the journey to Hyderbad, a pressure bandage was applied on his injuries. He was shifted to MaxCure Hospital, Madhapur where on arrival, his condition was very critical. Doctors worked rigorously to save this young life.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Satish Kumar, head emergency team said, “When arrived, we found that his right upper limb was cold and there was no pulse.

This was a threatening sign of limb ischemia (dead) and he was bleeding actively from the injured site. Because of bleeding, his BP and Hemoglobin was low. It was very critical situation and we had to stabilise his condition before we could call our vascular specialist Dr Shailesh Kumar.”

Dr Shailesh Kumar Garge, vascular specialist at MaxCure Hospitals, said, “Upon Angiogram, we discovered that there was active bleeding from a short segment (around 4 cm) brachial (arm) artery.

Considering his low BP and hemoglobin, open would have been more riskier and hence we had to perform internal bypass surgery. The surgery took 4.5 hours and was a high-risk surgery considering the complications involved.”

“With internal bypass surgery, we connected the two separated segments of arm artery using a covered stent thereby stopping the blood leak and restoring the distal flow to the forearm resulting in saving of patient’s life as well as saving the right hand from amputation,” he added.
