The Jagannath Temple, Banjara Hills organised ‘Bahudha Yatra Festival’ on Monday under the aegis of Kalinga Cultural Trust which featured a series of classical dances presented by Natya Swara. The Three deities Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra—were set up atop colourfully decorated platforms opposite the stage. An air of gaiety pervaded the celebrating audience.

The opening was by Radha Vardan, a young Kathak artiste who presented ‘Ganesh Vandana’, ‘Rang Manch’ and ‘Krishna Vandana’. Bharatanatyam Guru Rama Devi’s students Rohitha and Yugarani started with ‘Pushpanjali’ in Amruthavarshini Raagam. ‘Mooshika Vahana’ described Lord Ganesha’s vehicle the mouse and his fondness for Modhakas, his ears resemble a hand held fan, he who wears snake as chain-like ornament around his waist, he who is short stature, he who is the son of Lord Parameshwara. O! Lord Vinayaka who is all the above and he who always annuls all impediments, we worship your divine feet.

Neha Singh’s students also gave a Bharatanatyam recital. They first performed items full of ‘Jati’ patterns displaying the dance of ‘Lord Shiva Shambho’ and ‘Shankara Srigiri’ an elaborately descriptive composition of Swati Thirunal. Adorned with holy ash and Rudraksha garlands his dance in perfect melody and ‘Laya’ is the cynosure of all eyes.

Kavadi Chindu is the generic name for folk songs of quick rhythmic tempo. Light compositions in Tamil are appealing due to their simplicity, content and emotion. They do not possess Pallavis, Anupallavis or Charanams. The particular one on Lord Muruga enchanted the audience with its brisk pace.

Hari Mangalampalli concluded with a magnificent musically lyrical composition of Dr Balamuralikrishna, the well-known Thillana in Kadanakuthoohalam. His sprightly Bharatanatyam performance was well received. Statuesque poses combined with vigorous movements were a hallmark of his recital. The briskly melodious music was a delight to hear.
