Artist Aqeel has been fortunate to see the brush strokes of his father, noted painter, Aziz on the canvas since his childhood. His other privilege was the love for music that his father had, not to forget the passion with which his brother Shakeel practiced and played sitar. And when there are colours and music swaying all around, it was but natural for Aqeel to bring this inspiration on the canvas in the form of an exhibition ‘SoundScapes’ at the Hotel Park Hyatt.

The paintings reflect Aqeel’s penchant for nature as he has always spent time away from the concrete jungles of the city for short periods. One can see musicians in natural surroundings singing and dancing in gay abandon. There is a kind of intensity and passion in paintings, which depict musicians in deep meditation and in the mood of joy.

Aqeel also had the opportunity of listening to live concerts of some of the living legends of music like Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Pandit Ravi Shankar,Ustad Amjad Ali Khan,Ustad Shahid Parvez and Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. There is a painting ‘Fused’, which has the fire of love and passion that could come out of a duet concert with the male singer bringing out powerful music as in contrast to the tender lovelorn songs of a female singer.

A painting titled ‘Jashn’ is something to really appreciate. It’s made in a circular format with a Manipuri ‘Pung Cholam’ dancer in the centre and the brush strokes of Aqeel makes one feel the force and movements of the art. There is a beautiful painting titled ‘Distant’, which is ‘drowned’ in the dream blue colour shades. Says Aqeel “Maybe that my dreams come out of the ‘Blues’.

I enjoy good music, it could be Indian or Western flowing away in the background. Even though I did my BFA from the JNAFAU, it was the constant influence of my father’s work that moulded my art on canvas. I also like to indulge in mixed media along with oil and acrylic medium on canvas and have a passion to capture heritage sites on the canvas.” The art exhibition is on tillJuly 23 at Hotel Park Hyatt, Banjara Hills.
