As part of an awareness session on ‘World Hepatitis Day’, ‘Save the Liver Foundation’ organised a talk about the ill-effects of tattooing in the city on Friday.

Dr KS Somasekhar Rao, gastroenterologist and herpetologist at Apollo Hospital said, “Using unsterilised needles or surgical instruments, tattooing, branding, unsafe sex and mother to child transmission are the main reasons for Hepatitis-B, especially in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh; this was found in a study that I conducted recently.”

Dr Rao was referring to the screening campaign he conducted in Izamandal in Gadwal district, AP Giddalur in Praksham district, Rentichintala in Guntur district and Palakollu and Amalapuram in East and West Godavari districts in 2015-16 where they screened about 20,000 people.

Loksatta leader Jayapraksha Narayan took part in the programme. He suggested that people should voluntarily test for hepatitis. “For these two tests are available;HBSAg or Hepatitis-B and Anti HCV for Hepatitis-C,” he said and added that both the hepatitis were curable with medicines when detected early.

He also said to prevent the transmission of Hepatitis –B after delivery the child should be vaccinated with Hepatitis-B and Immunoglobulin immediately. Further he said only with united action and increasing awareness about the viruses we could achieve our goal of elimination.

“Untreated Chronic Hepatitis Viruses (Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C) could lead to Cirrhosis of Liver and Liver cancer,” he said. He informed that to achieve a world free viral hepatitis their foundation is educating people for awareness programmes. “For screening and free treatment in Telangana and AP one can contact on 9492948899,” he informed.
