Become dope-vigilant, faculty urged

Addressing the faculty of government degree colleges as part of an awareness programme on ‘Prevention of Drug Abuse’ at ASCI’s College Park Campus on Wednesday, he said, “There is a need to form small committees in colleges to keep a tab on the student community.
The committee should monitor abnormal behaviour of students apart from their attendance and work in coordination with police to tackle the menace."
The event was organised by the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), and sponsored by RashtriyaUcchatarShikshaabhiyan. More than 50 faculty members across the Telangana region took part on the first day.
Bhagwat strongly felt the need of making attendance compulsory to keep students busy. "Checking of vendors and hawkers around educational institutes and random check in hostels are a must. Faculty and wardens should figure out the reasons for sudden drop in performance of kids."
The 1995 batch IPS officer, who elaborated the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act-1985, explained Iceland National Programme that transformed the country into the cleanest living teens in the world.
Professor TummalaPapi Reddy, Chairman, Telangana State Council for Higher Educationsaid that a multi-pronged strategy by involving teachers-students and parents is needed to tackle this "deep-rooted menace."
He assured Vice Chancellors that the Council would be ready to fund the publicity campaigns to create awareness among student community. A Vani Prasad, Commissioner, Collegiate Educationcalled upon education sector to rise to the occasion by empowering the younger generation with right information on the ill effects of drugs.
"Commissionerate of Collegiate Education is playing a crucial role in creating awareness on coping with the menace of drugs abuse. ASCI is privileged to undertake the opportunity to carry out the awareness programmes for faculty," said Prof B Lakshmi, Director, Centre for Human Development at ASCI, and added that faculty of government polytechnic colleges will also be trained as part of the initiative.
