Instilling hope in patients suffering from glaucoma, Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital restored the vision of 55-year-old patient through the ‘Single Pass Four Throw Pupilloplasty’ (SFT) recently.

Explaining about the procedure during a press meet on Friday, Dr Vamshidhar, Head Medical Services of the hospital said, “This medical breakthrough was invented by our chairman and managing director, Dr Amar Agarwal and is an effective method to treat closed angle glaucoma.”

Elaborating about the procedure, he said, “The biggest advantage of SFT is that unlike the current gold standard treatment like medication, laser and Trabeculectomy, it addresses the root cause of the condition. SFT opens the angle structures thereby allowing the aqueous (fluid in the eye) to flow freely, which otherwise would have stayed within and build pressure in the eye.”

An innovative treatment, SFT can be used in both early and advanced closed angle Glaucoma cases. “In SFT, the iris position is corrected by releasing the iris from the angles where the fluid drains. This method of pulling the iris creates clear angles. With this, the iris is prevented from blocking the aqueous or fluid flow inside the eye, which is necessary to maintain pressure,” explained the doctor.

“The method has been found to give better outcomes as compared to laser treatment. It also serves as an added advantage in treating patients with high eye pressure due to closed angles by iris tissue,” he said.

The patient, Lingamma said, “I was worried of losing the little vision I had. I’m very grateful to Dr Vamshidhar and team who is responsible for restoring my vision. I’m able to go to work now and lead a normal life.”
