Training for ER clinicians in snake bite emergencies
The overall objective of this CME (Continuous Medical Education) programme in ‘Snake Bite’ management is to empower and equip emergency medicine clinicians at district level, so that the risk of morbidity and mortality is minimized by the time the affected patients are brought to the city for treatment, said Mujtaba Hasan Askari of Helping Hand Foundation.
Each year around 500 – 600 snake bite cases get reported at OGH and in the rainy season, OGH gets about five to six snake bite cases daily and equal number of cases get reported in other tertiary hospital in the city, Gandhi recorded 30 snake bite cases just in July 2017 alone, all these cases are mainly from the neighboring districts and most of these cases seek treatment in Hyderabad due to lack of trained staff and facilities at the district level – In view of this alarming situation, City based NGO, Helping Hand Foundation is collaborating with Department of Emergency Medicine of NIMS (Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences) and will conduct the for the first time in the state, skill based workshops on ‘Snake Bite Emergencies’ every alternate Wednesday’s in batches of 20, for emergency medicine clinicians, paramedics and ANMs startingAugust 30, between 10am and 4pm at the new auditorium, fifth Floor, Trauma block at NIMS Hospital, Punjagutta.

Helping Hand Foundation will also help a interested district and area hospital in setting up ‘Anti Venom Centres’ post training and will supply the new pentavalent form of ‘anti serum vials’, so that first level of intervention can happen at district and area hospitals in a snake bite case, which is very critical and can significantly reduce the risk of complications and save lifes. Resources required for this project will be initially borne by the NGO but long term needs will be crowd funded, we will also be approaching the government for their support said Mr. Mujtaba Hasan Askari of Helping Hand Foundation.
The training module which is designed by NIMS Emergency Medicine will comprise of five dedicated lectures and two skill workshops followed by pre test assessment and post test discussion. ‘Emergency Clinicians and paramedics’ from districts attached to District and Area Hospitals and Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) in TS along are requested to avail this opportunity said DrAshima Sharma HOD and Prof of Emergency Medicine at NIMS. The training will be sponsored by the NGO and lunch will be served for the participants.
