The English and Foreign Languages University (EFL University) organised an interactive talk on ‘Drug Abuse’ by Dr Akun Sabharwal, IPS, Director of Prohibition and Excise, Telangana State along with Prof. E Suresh Kumar, the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Speaking on the occasion Prof. Suresh Kumar said, “Being firm is the only way to build a drug-free self, drug-free campus, and a drug-free nation.” He also urged the students to have the courage to be assertive and not buckle under peer pressure.

Dr Akun Sabharwal charted a two-pronged plan to save the country from the menace of drugs. The first is saying ‘no’ to drugs right from the first instance and second is bringing drug abusers to the notice of the authorities. He added that it should be considered as an illness that needs treatment.

“Many of you may not follow local media and newspaper, but the Wrangler media has highlighted this problem very well. Sometime around the mid-May and beginning of June, one night one of my officers got attacked and that person who assaulted the personnel was brought to the Secunderabad excise station.

After that incident, I went and talked to the accused and he listed some names who were involved in this racket and after that, we had the big catch. Till now the department has 11 cases,” he said.

Sharing his opinion on Punjab, he said, “There’s difference between Punjab and Hyderabad. Punjab has a boundary with Pakistan which is called the ‘Golden Triangle’ of drugs. Drugs come from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran and the complexity in Punjab is much worst.”

The talks were preceded by a presentation prepared by the Narcotics Control Bureau on raising awareness and building measures to fight substance abuse.
